Entry requirements and offers
Here’s our handy guide to understanding undergraduate course entry requirements and offers at NTU.
What are entry requirements?
There are certain requirements you need to meet to be eligible to study a course at university - these are known as entry requirements.
Course entry requirements are typically made up of UCAS Tariff points and sometimes particular grades and subjects. Points are determined from your qualifications including A-levels, BTECs, T Levels and many more.
Typically, they look like this:
- 112 UCAS Tariff points from up to four qualifications.
- 112 UCAS Tariff points from up to four qualifications including a grade C in an A-level Science subject
Understanding UCAS tariff points
Everything you need to know
We accept a range of qualifications and the grades that you are predicted/achieve make up UCAS Tariff points.
We typically ask for a maximum of four qualifications to make up your points. These can be the same type of qualification or a combination such as A-levels, BTECs or an extended project. If you are taking more than four qualifications, we’ll take your four highest grades to make up the total points.
You can use the UCAS Tariff calculator [link] to see what qualifications carry tariff points, and we’ve got a couple of examples below to show how they work.
Example 1:
- Offer: 120 UCAS tariff points from up to four qualifications
- A-level English – grade C (32 points)
- A-level Psychology – grade B (40 points)
- A-level Geography – C (32 points)
- Extended Project – C (16 points)
Example 2:
- Offer: 136 UCAS tariff points from up to four qualifications
- BTEC Level 3 National Diploma, Business - grade DD (96 points)
- A-level Economics – grade C (40 points)
What about specific subjects?
Some courses ask for a grade in a specific qualification/subject, and you’ll need to achieve this as part of the entry requirements.
Example 1:
- 112 UCAS Tariff points from up to four qualifications including a grade C in an A-level Science subject
- A level Chemistry – grade C (32 points)
- A level Psychology – grade B (40 points)
- A level Geography – C (32 points)
Example 2:
- 112 UCAS Tariff points from up to four qualifications including A level Maths grade C
- A level Maths – grade B (40 points)
- A level Psychology – grade C (16 points)
- AS level Biology – grade B (16 points)
- Extended Project grade A (24 points)
If you’ve started university but want to change course or institution, we can consider credits that you’ve achieved through prior study. Learn about NTU's policies for students that are transferring.
If you are a mature student and looking to return to education and don’t have UCAS Tariff points, we’ll consider your work/life experience through a prior learning assessment.
Please contact our Admissions team if you need advice about your qualifications and application.
When you apply to an undergraduate course through UCAS, and you meet the criteria, an offer from NTU will be uploaded to UCAS Hub. This will either be a conditional or unconditional offer.
An unconditional offer is just that – you have met the conditions required for the course and if you accept the offer then your place at NTU is guaranteed!
Conditional offers will display the total UCAS points that you need to achieve in order to be accepted, as well as any specific grades or subjects that you need to be taking.
The amount of UCAS points that you need will be determined by the Admissions team and will be really clear in the offer.
We do make contextual (lower) offers based on individual experiences and circumstances, such as if you have been in care or if you receive free school meals. We get this information from UCAS, so if you think you’re eligible you don’t need to do anything to receive a contextual offer.
