Winter Welcome is the perfect way to settle into life at NTU – and a great introduction to your new student community!

A warm winter welcome to all our students

There will be lots of events on offer during your first few weeks to help welcome you to Nottingham Trent University (NTU), the Nottingham Trent Students’ Union (NTSU) and the city itself.

Winter Welcome will take place from Monday 13 January - Monday 17 February 2025. We will be posting a full list of events below so check back to see what you'd like to attend and make sure to get involved.

We recommend that you complete the British Council's Study UK: Prepare to study and live in the UK course before you arrive in the UK. This resource has lots of useful advice about preparing for your studies in the UK that you may find helpful to complete before starting to study at NTU.

Winter Welcome Fairs

Come along and speak to all of our services in one place. You can discover what support is available, what societies you can join and how to make the most of your NTU experience.

You are welcome to take part in both events but we strongly encourage you to attend the fair on your home campus to find out more about where you'll be studying and where you can find help should you need it.

  • Cultural Diversity Training - Clifton Global Lounge, Mary Ann Evans 019 - 1 - 2pm - Join this interactive session to gain and enhance your knowledge about cultural diversity, a vital skill for a globalised workforce. Through this session you'll also explore your own personal identity and get an opportunity to meet students from around the world. This session also counts towards the NTU Employability Global Award.
  • Games Afternoon - City Global Lounge, 23 Goldsmith Street - 3 - 5pm - Join us for this weekly event for some fun games. Today we'll be playing Human Bingo to get to know our fellow students. There are also lots of other board games available. Free hot drinks and snacks will be provided.

  • Stop Motion Workshop - Newton Building, City Campus - 12 - 2pm - Get creative with Tim Neath from Nonsuch Studios — bring along your mobile phone and make your own stop motion animation. Be guided through the basic principles and use props, Lego, cardboard and your imagination to tell short stories through the magic of stop motion in this fun, free workshop.   • Cross-cultural Communication Training - Clifton Global Lounge, Mary Ann Evans 019 - 1 - 2pm - Join this opportunity for students to gain and deepen knowledge on how people from differing cultural backgrounds communicate, in similar and different ways among themselves, and how communicate across cultures. Come to learn how to minimize cross-cultural misunderstanding and conflict, and deepen your knowledge of personal identities and how they affect how we see the world. This session also counts towards the NTU Employability Global Award.

  • City Sightseeing Walk - City Global Lounge -12 - 1.30pm – Finding your way around Nottingham? Join us for a relaxed walking tour with the Global Lounge Ambassadors around the city centre starting at City Global Lounge. You’ll discover some of the main sights of Nottingham city centre, including the Market Square, Robin Hood statue and Nottingham Castle, plus cultural gems and attractions including galleries, museums, theatres, cinemas and music venues. We’ll also introduce you to some of Nottingham’s best kept secrets – international supermarkets, vintage clothes shops, and quirky cafés. Anything that’s a bit out of the ordinary, we’ll help you find it and all while making some new friends! Please note that this is an outdoor activity, so please dress weather appropriately, wear comfortable shoes and bring some water or snacks, if you need them. No need to book a place, just turn up!
  • British Culture Workshop - Clifton Global Lounge, Mary Ann Evans 019 - 12 - 1pm - Want to know more about Nottingham and British culture? Come to this event to find out more about some of the local ways of doing things, learn some interesting facts about your new home, such as the legend of Robin Hood and other great places to explore. We’ll share tips about settling in to Nottingham and you’ll also have the chance to meet other students. Have fun in our tea and biscuit challenge to test your taste buds on British snacks!

  • Stop Motion Workshop - Clifton Library, Clifton Campus - 12 - 2pm - Get creative with Tim Neath from Nonsuch Studios — bring along your mobile phone and make your own stop motion animation. Be guided through the basic principles and use props, Lego, cardboard and your imagination to tell short stories through the magic of stop motion in this fun, free workshop. NTU Global Week

Global Week is a vibrant, inspiring festival showcasing our multicultural community on campus every year. Through art, dancing, sport, and food, it connects and celebrates the different cultural heritages of our students and staff and provides an opportunity for them to extend their international outlook.

Global Week celebrations will take place 3-7 February 2025.

Global Lounge

All students are welcome to our Global Lounges at City Campus and Clifton Campus. You can join in with cultural events, practise at our Language cafes, join our games afternoons and meet students from around the world over a free tea or coffee and chat to our friendly staff.

Academic support

Library

We understand that studying in the UK can be very different from studying in your home country. We have dedicated Learning and Teaching Team staff and Student Mentors who offer 1-to-1 support with academic skills, maths, and statistics.

Support is available for everyone, and you can easily make a booking online via the NTU Library page. The library also runs lunchtime workshops and webinars on a variety of topics such as referencing and critical thinking:

DIASS Project

Things will be different, both in and outside the classroom and the campus, and getting to know a new culture and language is super exciting but also not always easy. This is why NTU and the Nottingham Institute of Language and Intercultural Communication (NILIC) have developed the DIASS project. DIASS stands for Developing Intercultural Academic Study Skills.

The online self-study course, which consists of eight interactive and fun units, will help you acclimatise to life at NTU and in the UK, prepare you for your academic studies, help you embrace diverse communities and develop your intercultural communication knowledge and skills. It also earns you 25 points towards a global employability award. Once you're enrolled as an NTU student you'll be able to access this course on the NTU Online Workspace, NOW.
