Volunteering opportunities in our law firm

Our fully regulated multi-award-winning teaching law firm  offers our law students the opportunity to gain real-life work experience in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Hundreds of Nottingham Law School students volunteer at NLS Legal every year. Growing in confidence, our teaching law firm helps them gain key professional skills that are highly valued by employers.

Our students are giving back to the community as they help to provide access to justice to those unable to afford, or otherwise access, legal services.

Gain legal experience

Examples of what our students can get involved with include:

  • various service areas including business, civil litigation, criminal, employment, family, housing, intellectual property, SEND, welfare benefits
  • administrative and risk and compliance placements
  • case analysis, research, client interviewing and drafting
  • tribunal representation / advocacy
  • Public Legal Education seminars and webinars
  • Outreach Advice Services
  • collaborations with other organisations
  • student committees.

Our students can get involved as part of a course or module or on an extra-curricular basis. We also offer a mix of in-person and online opportunities.

Why volunteer?

Volunteering at NLS Legal is a unique opportunity to gain practical work experience in a working law firm while you complete your studies. It all takes place under the supervision of qualified and experienced lawyers.

You will also be supporting access to justice, as our services are for those who cannot afford, or otherwise access, legal advice. Our students have told us that volunteering with NLS Legal has helped them to develop their drafting, research, time management, teamwork, communication, confidence, resilience, client interviewing and advocacy skills.

Additionally, year after year we are delighted to see that those students undertaking live client activity with NLS Legal outperform their peers.
