Public Wi-Fi is a convenient way to stay connected, whether you're studying in a café, a library, or on the train.

But while it's easy to connect, public Wi-Fi can expose you to cyber threats if you're not careful. Hackers often exploit unsecured networks to steal your personal information.

Here's how to stay safe while using public Wi-Fi:

Use the NTU Virtual Private Network (VPN)

A VPN encrypts your internet connection, making it much harder for hackers to intercept your data. As an NTU student you have access to Ivanti Secure VPN. Using this will connect you to the NTU network from wherever you are, so you can work more securely.

Stick to low-risk activities

Don’t use public Wi-Fi for tasks that involve sensitive information, like online banking, shopping, or accessing personal accounts. If you need to check something important, it's safer to wait until you're on a secure network.

Watch out for rogue Wi-Fi networks

You can’t always trust Wi-Fi networks available in public spaces as anyone can set up their own Wi-Fi network and name it ‘Starbucks_Wifi’ or ‘BTOpenZone’ for example. Look for signage that shows the correct name for the business’ network.

Use ‘https’ websites

When browsing the web, make sure you’re visiting websites that use ‘https’ in the URL, with a padlock icon in the browser address bar. The ‘s’ stands for secure, and it indicates that the site encrypts your data.

Disable file sharing

When connected to public Wi-Fi, turn off file sharing and AirDrop (on iOS) or similar services on your device. These features can allow others on the same network to access your files or transfer malicious files to your device.

By following these simple tips, you can use public Wi-Fi more safely while staying connected on the go. Remember, convenience shouldn’t come at the cost of your security!
