Spring has arrived and our resident peregrine falcons, P9 and Archie, who are nesting on the top of the Newton building, have laid four eggs.

The first egg arrived on the 26 March at 7:34 pm, the second was laid on 29 March at 3:08 am, the third arrived on 31 March at 7:18 am and the fourth on 2 April at 4:25 pm.

Once all the eggs are laid P9 and Archie will take turns to incubate the eggs for 29-32 days.

Starting incubation when all the eggs have been laid ensures that all chicks hatch at a similar time, reducing the chance of size difference which would cause larger chicks to outcompete the others for food.

This year, the NTU falcons have been featured on ITV News, BBC Radio Nottingham, BBC News and had their own segment on BBC Spring watch!

About the falcons

NTU has been working in partnership with the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust for the past two decades to protect the nest site.

Since high-definition cameras were installed in 2012, viewers have seen 31 chicks fledge – with 42 chicks fledging in total since the birds took up residence.

In 2021 we installed new cameras to ensure that viewers could watch the live webcam online and 2022 saw over one million views worldwide!
