About NTU Women's Hockey

We play at the brand new hockey facility on Clifton Campus, we run a number of social events during the year that involve the whole of NTU hockey as well as having separate Women’s hockey events. Our Men’s, Women’s clubs along with teams from our NTU Internal Leagues work together on charity fundraisers and community projects throughout the year to help maintain the profile of Women’s hockey being a top club at NTU both on and off the pitch.

Everything you need to know:

We currently have 6 BUCS teams who play on Wednesdays at differing levels.

Our 1st XI are currently playing in the BUCS National League the top league in the UK and our 2nds, 3rds & 4ths have all gained promotion in the last few years.

We also have 4 weekend teams who play on a Saturday at a competitive level throughout England Hockey leagues.

Every team throughout the club has access to two training sessions a week and all members have access to the pitch upon request without pressure to play in competition matches.

The annual fee is £210 which includes:

- Two training sessions a week with coaches
- BUCS and weekend matches upon selection
- Access to all women’s and whole club socials and events
- Opportunities to connect and participate in wider club activities such as paid umpiring and volunteer coaching

NTU hockey offers regular games in organised leagues across the University. Enter your own team into the league or we can allocate you a team. These leagues offer weekly fixtures during term time, coordinated by NTU Sport staff and officiated by qualified match officials.

No NTU Sport membership is required. You simply pay the weekly fee each time you play.

Women's hockey is one of NTU Sports designated performance programmes. As a performance programme, a selected squad of talented student athletes receive access to the following benefits:

  • A programme lead by either a Full and/or Part Time Head of Sport/Head Coach
  • Access to coach lead Strength & Conditioning programmes – both face to face in the High Performance Centre at Clifton Campus and via remote programming
  • Free access to physiotherapy/sports therapy both via online consultation, face to face treatment and on pitch/on court support when returning to activity
  • Free NTU Sport Performance kit
  • Access to group interventions in sports psychology and sports lifestyle.

NTU Hockey Clubs offer a number of scholarships awards each year to high-performing student athletes from a range of different sports for undergraduate and postgraduate study. Every award is tailored to the needs of the athlete to ensure they have what they need to achieve both academically and on the hockey pitch, whilst at NTU. Every award is also in-line with the core NTU values and the club culture within the hockey club which is to represent the university at the highest level in both BUCS and England Hockey competition.

We encourage all students to apply for a scholarship, and the process following the application will then be tailored on a case-by-case basis. The majority of scholarships are awarded during the pre-season period to allow all potential hockey scholars to showcase their talents alongside current students and scholars within the expectations of an NTU environment. With this in mind, we encourage students to speak about past playing experiences in their online application, with the understanding that their hockey background is one part of the overall decision-making process.

Throughout the season, scholars will have conversations with the Head of Hockey and other practitioners working with performance hockey squads to review their scholarship situation for the following year, an end of season review will be used to outline for each individual the scholarship process and their individual next steps.

It’s worth keeping in mind when applying for a sport scholarship at NTU as a hockey player:

  • Experience level is not a guarantee of a successful application
  • Sport scholars must compete for NTU in all competitions and attend all club training sessions
  • If you are unsuccessful in your application the first time around, you can apply again in the succeeding academic years. It’s common within the hockey programme for first year applicants to be awarded scholarships later in their academic journey
  • A sport scholarship is valid for one academic year only; sport scholars must reapply if they wish to continue to receive support

If you have any questions regarding our sport scholarship programme, email sportscholarships@ntu.ac.uk or call +44 (0)115 848 3219.

Our Head of Hockey at NTU is Jack Rhodes (jack.rhodes@ntu.ac.uk). Jack is a former international player and European champion.

The 1st XI has two supervised gym (S&C) sessions a week, the 2nd XI have a supervised gym (S&C) session once a week. Our performance players have access to Physiotherapy & our BUCS playing members can do so at a discounted rate.
