Introduction:

This summer school is ideal for anyone wanting to explore a range of contemporary topics in psychology, whilst getting a taste of what it’s like to study psychology at university. Through seminar and practical workshop sessions you will explore a range of contemporary everyday psychology – beyond the level taught at school.

  • You'll be taught ways to think scientifically, critically and psychologically throughout the summer school, giving you a head start for when you study psychology at University level.
  • With a limited class size you'll have the one-to-one attention you need to ensure you leave with the skills you need.
  • Benefit from learning with an experienced tutor who has established links to the profession and significant experience working in varied practices.
  • On successful completion of the summer school you will receive a certificate of attendance.

Doing your Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award?

This course can count as your Gold DofE Residential Award and is an amazing opportunity to make new friends and memories.

DofE participants must book both the course and accommodation on campus for this to count towards your Gold Award.

You must also attend the social events that are planned on Monday and Wednesday evenings, and you must plan and attend your own social activities with other participants on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

What you’ll study

You will form a critical understanding of some of the theories and methods used across a range of contemporary psychology topics.

During this summer school you will:

  • Explore psychological theory across a range of everyday topics, such as psychology of addiction, psychology of conspiracy, psychology of sleep, psychology of sport, psychology of body perception.
  • Engage in critical psychological thinking and discussion across important real-world topics that are relevant to them.
  • Evaluate the mechanisms of human behaviour
  • Engage in the scientific practices involved in psychological research
  • Have practical hands-on experience with specialist software used in psychology
  • Experience what studying psychology might be like at University
  • Engage in psychological thinking that can be applied in everyday life
  • Upon completing the course, you will be equipped with some of the background theoretical knowledge and skills essential even in year 1 study of psychology.

This summer school is an excellent opportunity to engage in critical discussions, design psychological studies, implement statistical software to answer psychological questions and generate explanations for human behaviour across a range of topics. The confirmed Summer School programme will be sent to you nearer to the course start date.

By the end of this course you'll be able to identify key skills needed to study psychology at university including awareness around the importance of reading in psychology, comparing different methods of proposing research and evaluating psychological theory.

You’ll leave the summer school being able to apply psychological thinking to aspects of your own life.

Social events

We appoint NTU Student Ambassadors who host social events on Monday and Wednesday evening to help you make friends across the whole of our summer school programme for 15 – 17 year olds, which are free to attend.

How you’re taught

This course will be delivered in person on Nottingham Trent University City Campus.

You’ll also have access to our library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can’t reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.

Entry requirement:

You should have an interest in psychology and wanting to study a psychology subject at university level.

You must be 15-17 years old at the time of the course in order to attend.

Fees and funding

The fee for this course is £525 (inc. VAT).

Payment is due at the time of booking.

If you're booking more than two months before the course starts, we can accept a £200 deposit to secure your place, and the balance is due one month before the course starts.

Need accommodation?

If you're aged 16 or 17 then you can stay unaccompanied with agreement from a parent/guardian.

To support safeguarding, all guests aged 16 and 17 will be accommodated together in the same halls of residence.

The reception and security team are available 24 hours, and there will be a dedicated supervisor(s) during the evenings and mornings, outside of class times.

Guests will be provided with a mobile number for the supervisor(s) during their stay.

If you're aged 15 then you can stay as long as you are accompanied by a parent/guardian.
