Course overview

The content for this course is split into 12 sections in order to provide a thorough overview of project management in addition to aligning to the Association for Project Management’s Body of Knowledge. The details of these sections are listed in the programme overview.

Through the delivery of this course, participants will secure knowledge of the theory behind effective project management in addition to experience of applying and testing the tools used in project delivery.

This latter element is designed to be undertaken in a critically reflective way to ensure that there is a clear understanding of why tools and models are used and how these can be adapted to suit the specific needs of the project to be delivered.

This course is accredited, gaining 20 credits at Level 5 when the assignment is completed and passed.

Day 4 - Thursday 3rd July 2025, 10:00am-12:00pm (online assessment)

Session 1: Exploring the Project Management Context

  • Implementing Strategy through Projects
  • This element considers the organisational environment in the selection of projects and their role in delivering benefits/outputs.  This will also develop and understanding of the role of projects in driving organisational change.

  • Understanding Project Lifecycles and Choices
  • This element considers the options available when developing project lifecycles.  This acknowledges the importance of understanding the lifecycle that projects go through and how these can be utilised to plan project delivery.

Session 2: Project Infrastructure

  • Establishing Project Governance
  • This stage of the course considers principles of project governance, sustainable practices in projects and developing business cases for projects

  • Shaping the Project
  • Building from the previous elements, this part of the course considers the shaping of portfolios, programmes and projects and the operational adjustments needed to contribute to project success.

Session 3: Project Planning

  • Defining Outputs
  • This element will build from session one where strategy progresses into project decisions including the defining of success and project benefits, the setting of objectives and requirements, options analysis and solution selection, and establishing the project scope.

  • Integrated Project Planning (Risk, Scheduling, Resource and Costs)
  • This element considers the options and process relating to risk identification, analysis and mitigation planning, project scheduling, optimising resources, costs planning and contingency planning.

Session 4: People in Projects

  • Engaging Stakeholders
  • This element of the course will develop an understanding of the identification, mapping and management of project stakeholders.  This will also include an aspect of managing conflict with stakeholders.

  • Leading Project Teams
  • This part of the course will establish processes and understanding around leading and developing co-located and virtual teams, the role of the project team leader and leadership styles, organisational culture, diversity and inclusion in projects and managing workplace stress.

Session 5: Delivering Projects

  • Transitioning into Use
  • This element of the course considers the issues associated with project completion including project handover/business readiness, unplanned project endings and project closure.

  • Working Professionally in Projects
  • This element of the course considers the crucial aspects of communicating and negotiating effectively, managing time, the regulatory environment in which projects operate in addition to project ethics and maximising continual professional development (CPD) through projects.

Session 6: Monitoring, Controlling and Closing Projects

  • Assurance, Quality and Knowledge Management
  • This aspect of the course investigates the structure around decision gates (project progress decision making), information management in projects and the quality assurance processes.

  • Monitoring and Controlling Projects
  • This element considers the management of project once in delivery and will investigate the processes for monitoring and reporting including risk, contingency and issues management in addition to managing change in projects.

How you’re taught

Delivery and Assessment

During delivery of the course, participants will work in small teams to apply the tools taught to a given project in order to build the knowledge and skills required to propose and initiate a project.  This will be accompanied by a clear understanding of how projects should be delivered and managed once underway.

The assessment will build from the group work whereby participants will undertake an individual assessment, based on the skills they have developed in the group work, by applying the tools and their knowledge acquired to a project of their choosing.

The course will be delivered over 3 full days of learning and 1 online assessment workshop. The Assessment hand in date is Friday 1 August 2025.

Spencer Ryan-Prewitt

Spencer is a former CEO of an Enterprise Agency with over 20 years of experience in supporting business start-up, growth and economic development through projects secured in the UK, Europe and North America.

He is also a Chartered Manager (CMgr) and Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute (FCMI) in addition to being a Senior Fellow of Advance Higher Education (SFHEA).

Joanna Booth

Joanna is a Principal Lecturer in the Department of Human Resource Management, the course leader for the Chartered Management Degree Apprenticeship and course leader for the PGCert, PGDip, MSc in Management, Leadership and Administration in Higher Education.

Prior to working in academia,  Joanna has had numerous roles within the not for profit sector including Finance manager where she provided strategic and operational financial management for a charity with a turnover of £1million. The role also included project management, finance and business development & advice.
