Introduction:

Please note: This course is delivered through the Enterprising Ashfield project, which is funded by the Government's Towns Fund. Nottingham Trent University (NTU) is pleased to offer free (fully funded) places on this course to support individuals and employees of businesses that are based in the towns of Kirkby-in-Ashfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield.

Have you heard about generative AI and want to know how you can effectively make use of it, to enhance both your and your organisation's business activities?

This one day short course will give you a crash course in generative AI and its capabilities, focusing on the use of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

You will explore some of the history and fundamentals of what this technology is and where it has come from, before turning to applied examples of how it can be used, in everything from marketing to document analysis and summary.

You will leave the day with a comprehensive understanding of the functionality of this technology alongside the conceptual issues that it poses regarding data security, ethical implications, and equality, diversity and inclusion impacts.

What you’ll study

This comprehensive course offers a deep dive into the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI), beginning with an overview of AI's evolution and an exploration of common free tools.

You’ll look at techniques for optimising AI usage through prompt engineering and constructing a versatile AI tool suite, and address critical ethical considerations and data privacy issues in AI employment.

Throughout the course you will develop your understanding of AI's opportunities and challenges in the business context, including risk mitigation strategies, before delving into the realms of machine learning and premium AI options like GPT-4, highlighting their benefits compared to free versions.

A key focus will be placed on the importance of quality data in AI efficacy, the use of AI for gaining customer insights and enhancing engagement, and the application of AI in innovating products and services.

The day will conclude with looking forward to the future of AI in business, discussing sustainable integration strategies.

By the end of the course, you will have a comprehensive understanding of AI tools and their context. You will be equipped with the knowledge to champion the integration of artificial intelligence in your business. You will also leave with a critical appreciation of some of the ethical issues that arise around AI as well as pragmatic approaches to mitigating them.

You will get an overview of artificial intelligence, including definitions, key concepts, and the various types of AI such as narrow AI and general AI. You will gain an understanding of how AI is transforming industries and daily life and consider the history of AI.

Learn how AI is being integrated into various business functions such as marketing, customer service, operations, and decision-making processes. Case studies and examples will be used to illustrate the impact of AI on business productivity, efficiency, and innovation.

Explore the importance of data in AI systems and the challenges associated with data quality, privacy, and security. You will learn about governance frameworks and best practices for managing data responsibly in AI projects.

Examine real-world applications of AI and discuss ethical, societal, and regulatory considerations associated with AI deployment.

You’ll explore strategies for preparing for the future of AI, including workforce development, organizational readiness, and long-term planning. Discussions will include the potential impact of AI on jobs, society, and the economy, as well as strategies for staying competitive in an AI-driven world.

How you’re taught

This course will be delivered in person at the Summit Centre in Kirkby in Ashfield.

On successful completion of the course, you will receive a certificate of attendance, which will further enhance your CV.

Tutor profile: Alastair Town

Alastair Town is an experienced project manager and educator at Nottingham Trent University.

They have recently built and delivered a comprehensive software training and consultancy service, with a particular focus on AI, for Nottingham Trent University and have already trained over 1000 academic staff on AI.

Alastair’s company, Pact Tech, offer comprehensive AI solutions tailored for a variety of educational stakeholders.

Entry requirements

No AI or software experience is required, although you must have basic computer skills and be familiar with Windows operating systems and file management.

You must also be familiar with navigating at least one of the following, Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Windows Edge.

You must be over the age of 18 in order to attend this course.
