Introduction:
In the MSc in Cyber Security course, you will embark on a comprehensive journey through the multifaceted domain of cyber security, learning to protect and secure information and computer systems from cyber threats and vulnerabilities. This program is designed to equip you with the latest knowledge and skills required to navigate the complex cyber security landscape.
You will gain a strong foundation in the fundamental concepts of cyber security, including cryptography, network security, penetration testing, secure coding, and information security management. The course delves into advanced topics such as intrusion detection systems, secure software development, and the management of cyber risk. You will learn about cutting-edge technologies and methodologies used to defend against sophisticated cyber-attacks and, through hands-on labs and projects, you will apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. What you’ll study
Throughout the course, you will explore a diverse array of cyber security issues and aspects, encompassing the study of network security, threat intelligence, cryptography, and digital forensics. Special attention will be given to understanding and mitigating vulnerabilities in software and hardware, securing cloud-based and IoT systems, and implementing robust information security management practices. The curriculum is meticulously designed to address both the theoretical underpinnings and practical applications of cyber security, ensuring students are well-versed in contemporary security challenges and solutions.
In addition to technical skills, the course places a strong emphasis on developing soft, transferable, and professional skills. Information and Computer Security (20 credit points)
Gain an in-depth exploration into the theory and practice of information security management. Engage with the core principles of cyber security, including confidentiality, integrity, and availability, alongside advanced topics such as risk management, information security architectures, and the human factors affecting security. Develop critical thinking and practical skills in assessing security risks, implementing security controls, and responding to cyber incidents. Acquire a holistic understanding of information and computer security challenges, enabling them to devise and implement innovative security solutions within organizational contexts.
Computer Forensics (20 cp)
Develop a critical appreciation of the theoretical and practical issues in the field of computer forensics. Learn the necessary skills, methodologies, and processes to conduct an initial computer forensics investigation within an organisation and gain an in-depth understanding of the importance of various computing systems in computer forensics investigations.
Ethical Hacking and Penetration Testing (20 cp)
Acquire the knowledge, skills, and ethical considerations necessary for identifying and addressing vulnerabilities in computer systems. Throughout this module, you will develop a deep understanding of ethical hacking and penetration testing methodologies, learn practical skills for exploiting vulnerabilities, and assess the ethical and legal implications of their actions. This module ensures that you are well-equipped to conduct penetration testing responsibly, with an emphasis on risk assessment and mitigation.
Design and Development of Secure Systems (20 cp)
This module offers a comprehensive exploration into secure software design and development practices. It focuses on integrating security principles throughout the system development life cycle, employing tools, standards, and protocols essential for creating secure systems. You will gain insights into security architecture, secure coding practices, and legal compliance, alongside evaluating system security through rigorous testing and verification. The module also emphasizes the importance of considering human factors in the development process, ensuring a holistic approach to building resilient and reliable computer systems.
Network and Cloud Security (20 cp)
This module offers an in-depth analysis of computer network security problems and the technologies used to address them. It focuses on the security challenges associated with migrating networked computing solutions to cloud infrastructures and explores strategies for mitigating associated security risks. You will also study network protocols, common network attacks, cloud computing models, and the extension of security measures to mobile devices. The module aims to equip students with the skills to design and evaluate security solutions, critically assess the quality of services within network and cloud environments, and develop comprehensive risk assessments.
Research Methods (20 cp)
This module equips you with essential skills for effective research, including the development of project definition documents, writing project reports, and technical papers. It covers research design and methodology, project planning and administration, information collection, oral presentations, writing technical papers, research governance and ethics, and time management. This module is foundational for students to critically engage with research practices, select appropriate methodologies, and develop comprehensive understanding and documentation for their research projects.
Major Project (60 cp)
On completion of the taught modules on this course you will then have the opportunity to undertake an MSc research project. This gives you 15 weeks to concentrate full time on a specialist area that interests you and apply what you have learnt to a specific problem.

How you’re taught
You will need to study six taught modules in your first three terms and by the fourth term, you will be conducting your research project. The course offers an excellent combination of theoretical studies and practical experience through coursework assignments, software development and individual and/or group projects culminating in a significant and practical master's project individually tailored to meet your career aspirations.
Throughout your course, you will be supported by your course leader and personal tutor, who will work with you individually. A comprehensive induction programme will provide you with essential information about the course, including access to the library and virtual learning portal.

The school of Science and Technology will work closely with you to help find a placement and strengthen your CV and interview techniques. You'll be supported and assessed throughout your placement year and will write a reflective report and diary at the end of your placement. When you successfully complete your placement and submit your placement report, you will be eligible to receive an additional award of a Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Practice.
Please note that placements are not guaranteed and the process is competitive through an application and interview process.
If you take the sandwich route, you will take a one-year work placement after the first three terms before returning to NTU the following year to start your research project.

- A UK honours degree (2.2 minimum) or equivalent in a technical or scientific subject, which includes but is not limited to sport science, biomedical, economics, information systems and multimedia.
- Applicants with relevant employment experience or other relevant qualifications will also be considered.
