Studying Design for Performance at NTU
The Design for Performance area encourages innovative approaches to contemporary design and creative practice in the performing arts industry.

As visual storytellers, you will be encouraged to be creative in your approach to your design practice and will utilise your professional skills, with a focus on responsibility to ethical and societal issues.

Why study Design for Performance at NTU?
While studying with us you will learn from skilled staff – experienced artists and designers – and hear from high profile guest speakers within the field. We regularly conduct collaborations and competitions with Nottingham Playhouse, Cameron Mackintosh, and The Tudor Tailor which will enable you to work on live projects and take part in a work placement with a theatre or on a film or TV production, where you’ll be encouraged to gain a Diploma or Certificate in Professional Practice.
Past placements have included The RSC, Downton Abbey, Gentleman Jack and in the West End theatres or you can get an international perspective by choosing to study abroad. You also work with your peers from across the Nottingham School of Art & Design, learning new skills, taking risks, and exploring new processes in our innovative Co Lab modules. Finally, we will support you in building your professional profile and portfolio and showcase your work to professionals in the performing arts industries at external exhibitions and events.

What facilities are available to Design for Performance students?
Our specialist facilities, tools and technology will support your creative journey. We have a fully equipped studio theatre with workshops, creative design studios with industry standard software and equipment and a digital production suite for 3D printing and laser-cutting. As graduates, you’ll have the skills and knowledge to translate your creative vision into professional practice in this exciting industry.
