More about Amelia

Why NTU?

What inspired you to study your subject?

"I have always been interested in health care I just wasn’t sure what role I wanted to play. I have a want to help people in their time of need. During COVID, I became more familiar with the ambulance service and decided that was my calling!"

Why did you choose your course and NTU?

"I decided to study the Certificate of Higher Education in Ambulance Technician Practice course instead of the BSc Paramedic Science course as I have been to university previously and was unable to apply for student finance. I also didn’t want to be at university for a long time as I felt I was ready to be working full-time. I also decided I would like to join the ambulance service at Technician level as I am always working towards the next step and enjoy trying to better myself, hence my future plans to return to university to up-skill to a Paramedic."

"I chose NTU as I had a really positive interview, found the environment to be supportive and really liked the campus!"

What’s your experience been like of your course so far?

"I thoroughly enjoyed my whole time at NTU from lectures to practical sessions. A highlight for me would be a session we did outside in the summer where we were practicing trauma scenarios out on the playing fields. It really brought what we had learnt in the classroom to life. I made some amazing friends whilst at NTU that I will remain friends with for the rest of my life."

Have you been involved in any projects or extra-curricular activities that have supplemented your studies run through NTU?

"I was one of two course representatives whilst at university which entailed attending meetings with other course leads and members of the facility to discuss the course and make any changes that needed to be made. I found this to really enhance my communication skills through taking the role of a leader for my cohort."

"I was also a part of the paramedic society and even got to attend the parasoc ball!"

On Placement

Have you completed any work placements on your course?

"A big portion of my time at university was spent on placement. This can be a scary thought, however placement is essential to put your skills into practice and get used to life on the frontline! I gained skills whilst on placement that can’t be taught in a classroom, for example how to treat patients with the upmost respect and caring for them like they are your family members."

Support

What do you think of the support available from tutors and staff at NTU?

"The staff at NTU are amazing, especially the course leads. They are always there to support you or talk to you if you have any worries. You can also book 1-1 tutorials with specific lecturers to go over topics you are unsure about."

Outside of the Lecture Theatre

Did you find it easy to make friends and settle in at NTU?

"I felt at home within the first week at university. The first few days are dedicated to familiarising yourself with your course, the campus and your cohort. This really helped me ease into university life."

The Next Steps

What’s next for you after NTU?

"I have accepted a job as a Newly Qualified Ambulance Technician with East Midlands Ambulance Service which I am due to start in July 2024."

Advice

What top tips would you give anyone thinking about studying your course at NTU?

  2. Practice your Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE) at home to perfect them.
  3. Always ask for help if you’re struggling, whether it is the course leads, lectures or even your course mates.
  4. Lastly, make sure you’re ready to put in the effort to achieve whilst at NTU, you’ll need a good work ethic and a positive attitude to be the best you can be!"
