More about Robert

Robert studied LLM Sports Law at NTU and is a Senior Associate in Malta. He is also a lecturer in Sports Law at the University of Malta and provides legal advice to football clubs and their players.

Why did you choose NTU to study Sports Law?

I always had a passion for sport so I wanted to combine my passion with my studies. NTU was the sole UK based university at the time to offer an LLM in Sports Law full time. I also read great reviews about the LLM Sports Law course that was offered by NTU.

What was your experience like being an international student at NTU?

Excellent. The course was a mix of fellow internationals, so it was great to meet people from different countries and backgrounds. It also helped to learn about different models/approaches in different countries/jurisdictions when it comes to sports law matters.

Tell us about your current role.

As Senior Associate at Dingli & Dingli Law Firm in Malta, I provide advice on company law, sports law, tax advice and banking law. I am President at the Malta Association of Sports Lawyers.

I decided to teach Sports Law at the University of Malta because I wanted to give something back that I learned at NTU combined with my work experience and to ensure that the upcoming generation are well informed about sports law matters.

Tell us about your involvement with the football clubs in Malta.

I provide legal assistance to clubs and their players when it comes mostly to disciplinary matters, such as suspensions or sanctions imposed for breaches of regulations.

I’m Head of Legal Affairs at Swiequi United Football Club which is a local club that I enjoy supporting on a voluntary basis.

What opportunities are available for students with a law degree who wish to pursue a career in law?

There are new niches within the sports law industry that continue to develop till this very day, for example, data protection.

What advice would you give to students interested in pursuing a career in sports?

Go for it! Make sure you keep up with current affairs happening within the sports law industry as well so that you are always kept up to date. I would also advise students to choose a specific sector within sports law that is of interest to them.

What have been the highlights of your career so far?

Having the opportunity to advise the Council of Europe (Sports Division) as well as being part of the Board that drafted Malta’s new legislation on match fixing and anti-doping.
