More about Ginika

Ginika Almona, a BA (Hons) Business Management and Entrepreneurship student.

Why did you choose Nottingham Trent University (NTU) and your course?

I chose NTU because Nottingham was a city familiar to me. I have such fond memories of visiting the city when I was younger and I always knew I wanted to come back. As for my course, I've always been interested in business and dream of starting my own someday. Nottingham Business School (NBS) was the perfect fit for me to learn and grow, so it was an easy decision to make.

What has stood out about Nottingham Business School?

There are many things that have stood out about NBS. The staff's dedication to every student's growth and success is remarkable. They are like cheerleaders for our success, who willingly offer their support in whatever way they can. NBS places a strong emphasis on both personal and professional development, offering several opportunities for students to develop in ways they never thought possible. The structure of learning also stood out with the array of practical assessments, other than the standard exams. All modules were taught in a way where it can be easily applicable to the real world.

Don't be afraid to say 'Yes' - being open to opportunities is what got me through university and made me the person I am today.

What is your favourite thing about your course?

It is really hard to pinpoint just one favourite thing, so here are a few things I enjoyed about my course.

  • The schedule and timetabling are so convenient, especially during my final year.
  • The module content is very interesting and is applicable beyond the lectures and seminars. It was learning tailor-made for life after graduation.
  • I also enjoyed the fact that the assessments came in different forms like essays, presentations, reports, as opposed to the standard exams.

How would you rate the course facilities and why?

The course facilities are effective, easily accessible and strategically set up to ensure we excel in our course. From the rooms used for lectures and seminars, to the NOW learning room detailing everything related to our modules, the facilities provided by NBS I rate very highly. I can confidently say that without the NBS course facilities, such as the link lounge and the extended learning area with computers, completing my degree would not have been as 'plain sailing' as it was.

Can you tell us a bit about your placement?

During my placement as a University Placement Executive at Step Recruitment Limited, I went from searching a placement to helping students secure a placement. I was responsible for organising and delivering employability sessions to about 200 international students pursuing a masters degree.

Being a part of their journey, educating them of the UK job market and preparing them for their career path was extremely rewarding. As part of my role, I came up with various successful strategies which increased student engagement by 100% and attendance by 50%. These strategies are still being used now.

Do you have any advice for future students on how they can make the most of their time at NBS?

Don't be afraid to say 'Yes' - being open to opportunities is what got me through university and made me the person I am today. Be willing to take a chance on yourself, because you are worth it! Also, make sure you complete all formative assessments. Although they do not add up to the final grades, they are set up in a way to ensure students get the best overall grades.

What three words would you use to describe Nottingham?

Fun, affordable, and diverse.

Did you find it easy to make friends at NTU?

Joining a society made it easy to make friends. Being a part of RY Trentside and Enactus NTU I was privileged to meet amazing like minded people that became part of my community.

What's next for you after NTU?

After completing my bachelors degree, I will be working full time at Step Recruitment.
