More about Alex

What made you choose to study at NTU?"I wanted a change of scenery from London and I heard great things about Nottingham Trent University before applying."

What do you enjoy most about our Graphic Design course?"I enjoy the freedom that we are given to develop and become the designer we want to be. This would not be possible without the tutors having the broad knowledge to advise us on all areas of graphic design."

Have you completed any live projects or briefs during the course?"The course has included lots of different briefs from a variety of established agencies. I decided to complete the Two Times Elliot brief and rebrand the London Print Studio. This was a particularly fun project for me as it allowed me to meet some great industry contacts and take my hobby of print making further."

Have you completed any work placements during the course?"I completed two placements whilst at NTU, both of which have eased my transition from university to industry. The two agencies I worked for were very different. One worked in the field of packaging design while the other was a media and advertising agency. These experiences helped me to gain a real perspective of the type of studio that suited me."

Congratulations on winning briefs at both D&AD New Blood and the YCN Student Awards! Can you tell us a little bit about the briefs?"The D&AD brief was to reinvent the John Lewis delivery packaging. For this project I designed a universal packaging solution that used rolls of perforated cardboard. I submitted a video explaining the idea and also sent in 3D items.

"The YCN brief involved creating an advertising campaign to keep teenagers playing cricket. With my teammate, Charlie Nash, we designed a multi-platform campaign to change the perception of cricket and how it is played. We then collated the information into presentation boards so that it could be judged."

How did you feel about being announced as a winner?"To be announced was an amazing feeling, all the late nights and early mornings working relentlessly had paid off and it was a great boost of confidence! Winning both of these competitions has given me exposure as a designer and also the opportunity to attend both the award ceremonies. My work will also be included in the YCN and D&AD annuals."

Why do you think it’s important for students to take part in competitions like this?"I think entering competitions is a great way to get exposure in the creative industry. It also provides a great platform to see work from lots of other different universities and gain a perspective of other graduates."
