More about Adam

What made you choose to study MA Photography at NTU?
"I really enjoyed my time studying at the University of Lincoln, however, I wanted to benefit from a fresh perspective. Growing up in Nottinghamshire, I was aware of the reputation of NTU and its art school. It was important to me that the lecturers were practicing photographer and artists as well as educators. I also liked that the course had links with industry."

How does it feel to have work selected for Portrait of Britain?
"I feel very honoured to be part of such an amazing project, representing the changing nature of Britain. I have followed the award since the beginning and now to be a part of it is truly amazing. I am also a big fan of Hoxton Mini Press, so I can’t quite believe that I will have two images in one of their books alongside other talented photographers."

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your postgraduate project?
"Paddle your own Canoe is inspired by my son, Jack, who has a love of dancing; however, refuses to attend lessons for fear that people would be mean to him. My project therefore focuses on the negative impact of patriarchy on young males. A boy is expected to defend himself through violence and even in his darkest hour, show no emotion. He is taught to value control, power and strength; rejecting anything considered to demonstrate weakness or failure. This mindset was something I did not want to pass down to my son."

What do you most enjoy about your course?
"I appreciated the opportunity to spend a year fully researching my subject; allowing the project to evolve over time. I also enjoyed being encouraged to problem solve for myself as this will be beneficial after graduation."

What is the most valuable thing you have learnt from your course so far?
"During my time at NTU, I have learnt so much which has allowed me to grow as an artist; however, the most valuable thing I will take away from the course is the importance of self believe (something I struggle with). Having the confidence in your own abilities will help to keep you moving forward throughout your career; NTU has taught me how to be a professional."

Has your course included any speakers / lecturers from industry?
"I found the talk and one to one session with BIPP photographer, Bella West, to be of great influence. Her talk was very inspirational and having the opportunity to sit and talk through my work with her was of great help to understanding where I may be able to take it in the future."

What do you like about studying and living in Nottingham?
"Although originally from Nottinghamshire, I currently live in Lincolnshire and have commuted throughout the year. I have enjoyed reconnecting and falling back in love with my home city. I particularly enjoy visiting the galleries - I have visited some inspirational exhibitions."

Why would you recommend your course and NTU to prospective students?
"I would recommend the MA Photography course at NTU to anyone who wants to further their understanding of photography and its position in art. The course is led by a team of outstanding, knowledgeable lecturers who are all successful in their chosen genre of photography."

What are your ambitions for the future?
"My long-term goal is to have the ability to support the next generation of photographers and artists through working as a university lecturer. I owe any success to the encouragement of my tutors and I would take great pleasure in being part of the education system that has supported me. I currently aim to continue to develop my project, as I believe the message behind the project to be crucial to the development of the next generation of men. Once complete, it is my ambition to exhibit the work with the possibility of producing a book. I am currently in the process of applying for grants to help fund the project."
