More about Rebecca

Why NTU…

Why did you choose NTU and your course?

I chose Civil Engineering as I really enjoyed Maths and Physics at school and problem solving so I wanted a degree that would cover all of these aspects. I went to university through clearing, and NTU stood out to me in the clearing stage and I would never look back now… it was the best decision for me!

What did you think about the course staff? How did they support your learning and university experience?

All of the course staff were amazing and so supportive throughout the five years that I was studying at NTU. They were there to offer guidance and expert knowledge at all times and visited my site when I was out on my placement year.

What was your favourite aspect of the course?

My favourite part of the course was that it had so many practical elements that have really helped in my early career as a site engineer. NTU is one of the few universities that offers such a vast amount of practical experience which is transferrable to the field. For example, the surveying fieldtrip was a favourite memory of mine as it really allowed us to put theory into practice and get that head start into using the equipment prior to the placement year. I thoroughly enjoyed the laboratory sessions in geotechnics, fluid dynamics and structures.

Tell us a little bit about your career since leaving NTU.

Since leaving NTU, I joined Morgan Sindall Infrastructure as Graduate Engineer on the Concrete Roads Framework and have worked on the A11 in Norwich and A12 in Chelmsford. I have spent time on site setting out, managing subcontractors and ensuring the works are built to the highways specification. Recently, I have moved on to the A423 Kennington Improvements Programme where I am working in the ECI phase of the project as a Site Engineer.

How would you promote NTU to potential students in 10 words or fewer?

Inclusive, modern university with supportive staff and students.

What has been your career highlight so far? How did what you learnt at NTU help you get there?

My career highlight so far was winning the CIHT Emerging Professional of the year 2024. This award recognises an individual who is making a difference within highways and transportation industry and names one of the UKs top Highways and Transportations young professional.

What is your biggest piece of advice to current students and those graduating this year?

Ask as many questions as you can and take all the opportunities you can to widen your knowledge and experience.
