Event details

Our goal is to organise a series of one-day meetings, starting with this inaugural event, which will bring together runners with sight loss/impairments, guide runners, organisations, and other stakeholders involved in guided running activities in Nottinghamshire and the East Midlands. By creating this collaborative space, our intention is to illuminate existing knowledge, explore future directions, and discover areas of academic research that require further investigation.

Over the past decade, there has been a significant increase in academic research focusing on the dynamic partnership between athletes with sight loss and sighted guides in sports. At the same time, organisations such as England Athletics and British Blind Sport have also intensified their efforts, offering workshops, programs, and awareness campaigns to support athletes and train guides.  Academics from the SHAPE research centre at Nottingham Trent University are hosting a symposium that aims to bring together people with a keen interest in guided running. The symposium aims to consider the current understanding of guided running and explore avenues to enhance the existing landscape for the betterment of athletes' well-being.

The symposium has three primary goals. Firstly, it aims to provide valuable insights to those seeking a deeper understanding of guided running and the ongoing support services available for visually impaired runners and guides in Nottinghamshire. Secondly, it aims to identify issues that require further exploration and generate ideas to shape the future of this field. Lastly, the symposium aims to facilitate discussions on how Nottingham Trent University can actively contribute to improving the guided running landscape within the region.
