Event details

In the mainstream of cultural and collective memory studies, linguists seem absent. No linguists have been elected to the executive committee of the Memory Studies Association, and the flagship journal Memory Studies caters for other disciplines in the humanities (literature, cultural studies, history) and for some qualitative social sciences (sociology, media studies). This conference aims to make a start at repairing this absence.

The role of language should not be taken for granted when we study how people attribute meaning to the past. Both memory (cultural and collective) and language are mutually constitutive. On one hand, our discursive choices heavily inform the contents of the memories we narrate. But on the other hand, the cultural experiences and meanings that are inherent to memories also inform the usage and evolution of language.

We believe that the study of language and its usage is of key importance to memory studies, in addition, and in connection to the field’s growing interest in cognition (Erll 2022, Hoskins 2021, Erll and Hirst 2022), embodiment (Giese and Keightley 2022), and the non-human (Craps et al. 2018, Sendyka 2021).

Getting to City Campus

Travelling by car

If you’re travelling to Nottingham by car, we recommend you use the city’s park and ride services and continue your journey by tram, as parking in the centre can quickly become expensive. We recommend that you use one of the following sites and board any tram serving Toton Lane or Clifton South:

  • The Forest (NG7 6AQ)
  • Phoenix Park (NG8 6AS)
  • Toton Lane (NG9 7JA)

Make sure you buy a ticket before you board the tram to avoid penalty fares and alight at the Nottingham Trent University stop. Visit the Nottingham Express Transit (NET) site for more information on the city’s park and ride services.

If you’re intending to park in the city centre, the closest and largest facilities to our City Campus are:

  • Trinity Square (NG1 4BT)
  • Talbot Street (NG1 5GG)
  • The Victoria Centre (NG1 3QN)

Travelling by train

If you’re planning on travelling by train, timetable information is available from National Rail.

Nottingham Station is a short walk from the city centre. When you arrive, our City Campus is best reached by tram – follow the signs from your platform, and head north on the Phoenix Park or Hucknall lines. The Nottingham Trent University tram stop is less than 10 minutes away.

  • Prices: £2.20 per adult (single), £3.50 (return), £4 (unlimited day ticket) – a £1 short hop’ ticket will get you a single trip between Nottingham Station and NTU.  At weekends, discounted group tickets are available. Make sure you purchase your ticket at the tram stop before boarding.
  • Frequency: Trams leave from Nottingham Station every 7-10 minutes.

Travelling by air

East Midlands Airport is just 15 miles from Nottingham city centre and there is a dedicated bus service between the airport and the city centre.
