Professor Robert Morris' Inaugural Lecture

Magnetic Resonance for Everyone: A Spin Class

Rob Morris
Networking | Public lectures

Unlike other spin classes, this inaugural lecture by Professor Robert Morris will focus on the type of spin possessed by atomic particles which, with a little bit of outside help, allows many materials to undergo magnetic resonance.

Event details

A basic introduction to the underlying science of the magnetic resonance technique will be presented, before embarking on a journey of creation and discovery where you might even get chance to build your own magnetic resonance sensor. The talk will finish with a look at some of the wide ranging applications of these devices.

Professor Robert Morris is a professor of physics in the School of Science and Technology at Nottingham Trent University with diverse research interests in Magnetic Resonance (including imaging and sensing) and materials science which he particularly enjoys using to support the needs of industry. Over the past 5 years he has secured over £2M of research funding, focused on industrial research, applying his skills and knowledge to diverse applications from honeybees, through medical devices and food research to lightweight body armour.

He is currently working on an EU funded Research and Innovation Staff Exchange Project: Sugar and Chocolate Authenticity and Quality (SuChAQuality). This project, with 10 international partners from academia and industry, seeks to develop new technologies and methods to detect adulteration of confectionary and chocolate ensuring the consumer gets the highest possible quality products.
