Where do we come from? and How was our Universe created? are the most fundamental questions astronomers ask themselves. Understanding therefore the ages of what our Universe contains - for example clusters of galaxies, galaxies, star clusters, and planetary systems - and how they evolve is crucial.

For this task, the determination of the ages of stars is vital to understand how the Universe and its content have formed and developed with time. Stars can be seen as timepieces scattered throughout space, that tell us about the past evolution of the cosmos. Prof Maurizio Salaris (ARI-LJMU) aims at explaining in his talk How do we know the ages of stars? what we really do to determine the ages of stars and their host galaxies, even for the distant ones that can just be seen as blobs of light with the most powerful telescopes. This is a unique opportunity to meet the author of the book Age-Dating Stars awarded the 2022 outstanding academic title by the Association of College and Research Librarians in the USA, due to its first treatment of this subject in a book and originality as well as uniqueness of its treatment.

Booking is required for this event while attending in person. While attending, you consent to filming, photography, and sound recording – which may include you as a member of the audience – and its use in publication or advertising distribution, either printed or online, without payment or copyright.
