TILT FLEXIBLE AND ONLINE LEARNING GROUP SYMPOSIUM - 27/28 FEBRUARY 2023

“Stories of flexible and online success – What does the future hold?”

The last few years has tested our resilience beyond limits. It has also encouraged boundless creativity as we grapple with how to continue to deliver excellence in teaching and learning whilst continuing to navigate uncertain terrain.

Throughout this period, a consensus is emerging that reverting to a pre-pandemic position, abandoning all of the hard work, all of the learning and all of the value added, would be the wrong thing to do entirely. The sector is rightly reflecting upon the appropriateness of our learning environments, and wisely asking the question, “what types of activities are best suited to physical spaces and which to virtual spaces?”. Both have a place. One is not superior to the other.

We pivoted online, then back to on campus, then for some a hybrid and now we settle (for how long?) with being largely back on campus but with some digital elements. In this symposium, we are interested in what those digital elements are.

As we move away from the emergency measures that characterised 2020 and early 2021 and settle into our new way of being, what do we think the future holds for flexible and online learning and why? Which aspects of teaching and learning practice will continue to be digitised? What types of activity have greatest impact and are best suited to being online?

In addition to hearing from our colleagues, we wanted to use this event to provide clarity on the University’s position on Digital Learning, and so the event will also feature briefings from key stakeholders leading the NTU Flex initiative and supporting this with workshops to develop competency and understanding of institutionally supported digital tools and technologies.

For the third year running, the TILT Flexible and Online Learning Group want to take this opportunity to celebrate a whole range of successes, both large and small, in digital and online learning. We want this event to be vibrant, dynamic and accessible and therefore we want to encourage a variety of contribution formats that not only will benefit participants on the day but will go on to create a legacy resource that dovetails with the exceptional work undertaken by the FLEX NTU team and the fantastic resource base that is ever evolving in response to our growing competency in this area.

The goal of this event is to highlight and share what we learned in terms of the application of technologies for learning and teaching, and for supporting student experience, and use this insight to make predictions for what the future holds. We would like a particular focus to be on what we have found works best to be delivered digitally and why, and the elements of digital practice that we will carry forward.

Because previous events have been so well received, we wanted to create capacity for everyone to have the opportunity to present ‘live’ should they wish to, as we recognise that this is when opportunities for the most meaningful dialogue and discussion are presented.  We also wanted to open our doors to external presenters and attendees so that we can share in a meaningful dialogue of how our experiences across NTU compare with the sector.

Themes could include, but are not limited to:

  • Effective online orientation/matriculation
  • Tools and technologies for learning and teaching
  • Facilitating experiential learning through digital means
  • Supporting students digitally
  • Enhancing engagement
  • Creating social opportunities digitally / building community
  • Innovative digital assessment and feedback
  • Online skills development

We welcome expressions of interest in the following formats:

  • Keynote presentation (30 mins) – need to focus on general/ overarching messages not specific projects
  • Roundtable discussion/workshop (30 mins)
  • E-poster/digital resource (e.g. Padlet, Sway etc)
  • 1 minute CPD video (some examples from across NTU)
  • 10 minute presentation (live or recorded)
  • Pecha Kucha presentation (live or recorded)
  • Any other digitally enabled contribution of your choice!!

Best Wishes
