The project

Our planet is in critical need of help due to climate change, with natural disasters occurring more frequently than ever before. The School of Exploration focuses on environmental and earth science through the concept of 'Discovery Nexus.'

This concept is explored through three core areas: snow, sea, and space, which serve as a powerful framework. These areas of study aim to raise awareness and educate both students and the public on these pressing issues. They form the foundation of Rosika's architectural program, as they are all interconnected in terms of environmental matters. Each theme encompasses unique aspects that can be translated into architectural elements, fostering an immersive and dynamic learning environment. These themes create opportunities for fluidity and interconnectedness within architectural design. The spaces will be designed to encourage collaboration between different subject areas and engage with the public, mirroring the collaborative nature of scientific exploration. Students and visitors will explore environmental sciences on our planet and beyond, delving into the universe itself.

'Discovery Nexus' ties the three areas together, as it signifies 'combining,' with environmental awareness at its core. This program aims to nurture curiosity by pushing the boundaries of traditional educational spaces. This project also creates a holistic environment that stimulates curiosity, collaboration, and environmental awareness, embarking on a metaphorical journey that mirrors the diverse and interconnected nature of the subjects.

Inspiration for the project

Rosika was inspired by creating theatrical and playful design as she wanted to push the boundaries of a typical education and architectural space. She was also inspired by futurism, neo futurism and technology used in the three areas of exploration (sea, snow, and space) such as the Halley VI research station In Antarctica. Architects/designers that inspired Rosika were Cedric Price - Fun Palace, Studio Gang – Richard Gilder Centre, and Archigram – Plug in City and the Walking City.

Being part of NTU

NTU has allowed Rosika to express all avenues of design. The tutors have been amazing and supportive always pushing her to do her best and to achieve the best outcomes. The course has been incredibly tough but extremely rewarding and fulfilling.

Closing remarks

Although the course is tough, you get so much enjoyment and fulfilment. This course gives you so many skills in many different areas. Architecture really allows you to express your personality and interests within your work. I think this is key for creating some interesting and unique designs. Don't be afraid to try new styles and go crazy with your architectural designs pushing the boundaries of every brief.
