Dondo Rocking Stool by George Almond

The Project

The Dondo Rocking stool has been designed to incorporate flexibility and movement while working. Created for MAGIS, it embodies playfulness through its unique rocking motion. The forward-leaning position promotes upright posture during focused tasks, while the second position offers relaxation. Its sophisticated appearance pairs well with the fun of its rocking motion, enhancing concentration and productivity. The aim is to increase concentration and productivity by creating two comfortable working positions to alternate between.

The rocking stool is a playful twist on classic rocking furniture. The considerate design and function features a "V" shaped leg rail to illustrate the unique tipping motion. Whether reading, studying, or taking a break from work, the Dondo's considerate motion and seating positions keep your body comfortable and your mind productive. Crafted with quality materials and a contemporary aesthetic, the Dondo rocking stool is perfect for any workspace or home. The combination of rocking seating and a stool makes the Dondo great for your back and core as well as your posture.

The Inspiration for the project

This project originated from contemplating what makes seating playful whilst retaining functionality. MAGIS is a furniture company known for seamlessly incorporating playful elements into its eclectic range of products. George wanted to incorporate movement into a stool without following the traditional route of curved skies. He developed the unique rocking motion through several full-scale working prototypes. The design and language of the stool followed the functionality.

This project allowed George to develop his practical skills in the workshop by blending creativity and craftsmanship to produce a high-quality piece of furniture that he could be proud of. Having done a placement where he learned a new CAD software and primarily designed digitally, George wanted to hone my other skills by building the stool himself, creating all the jigs and joints by hand, rather than relying on technology like the CNC machine.

Being part of NTU

During his time at NTU, George immersed myself in a plethora of learning experiences. He delved into various CAD software, as well as hands-on model-making and workshop production where honed his practical skills. The opportunities and industry contact have been a highlight of his degree, including our study trip to the Vitra Campus in Germany as well as his placement year learning new skills designing interior furniture for Princess Yachts.

Overall, his university journey in furniture design has been a profound blend of learning, creativity, and friendship, shaping George into a versatile and resilient designer ready to embark on new challenges in the field.
