Civil Engineering Students Visit Arcadis, York

On 15th February a group of second year BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering students from Nottingham Trent University visited the offices of Arcadis in York.

Civil Engineering students stood around a conference table holding up their aweards.
Civil Engineering students visiting Arcadis, York

This visit was the culmination of a collaborative project with Arcadis, where students were challenged to reimagine the design of Beaulieu Park Station to incorporate sustainability and accessibility at the heart of the design, focusing on the parking, cycling, taxi and drop-off areas of the station.  Students were given a brief and a drawing pack from Arcadis and encouraged to think outside the box.

The winning team were invited to the Arcadis design office in York to present their winning solution to the design team that worked on the actual project, as well as being able to talk to the office teams, getting a glimpse of life in a real design office. The design team gave the students incredible feedback, and the students rose to the challenge, taking away valuable skills, ideas and experience.

Being able to see the day-to-day work of real engineers from the civils, bridges, structures and project management teams at Arcadis really opened the students’ eyes to what the work environment was like and gave them ideas about their potential career paths.

We’d like to especially thank NTU MEng Civil Engineering Design & Construction alumni, James Rawlin, now of Arcadis, for the valuable time and effort he has put in to developing this project and to everyone at Arcadis for their enthusiasm and support.

This is yet another example of the importance of work like experience and real life projects the civil engineering team place on their courses at NTU.
