Impressive wins for Further Education students in Sherwood Forest ploughing match

A remarkable result for our Further Education (FE) students who competed in the Sherwood Forest ploughing matches which took place last month. Students had the opportunity to showcase their technical skills and bring home prizes.

Sherwood Forest ploughing match

Last month, second year Further Education Agriculture students Joe Goodison and Hugo Pilkington competed in the Sherwood Forest ploughing match, successfully securing first and second place in the Novice Reversible category.

The match took place on Sunday 26 November at Budby and they represented NTU excellently. The teaching staff express immense pride in Joe and Hugo's achievements. Andrew Twidale, Technical Specialist, commented on their success: "What makes this accomplishment even more remarkable is the age of the students. At 17 years old, these students displayed courage by entering contests where seasoned competitors often have years of experience. They both did extremely well as neither student had previous experience in ploughing, but were willing to give time to practice in the evenings prior to the ploughing match. The experience they gained is enormous and it is good that the university has involvement in local events."

Other ploughing match successes

Earlier in the year, FE students also saw success at both Flintham and Southwell ploughing matches. At Flintham, Eleanor Swain won the Novice ploughing trophy and Angus Rawlinson came second. Whilst at Southwell, Jack Norsworthy won the Commercial Reversible class with Joe Harper coming a close second. As the Sherwood Forest ploughing match was a lot later in the year, Joe and Hugo dedicated extra hours, often during evenings and weekends, for additional training.

Overall, the outcomes of this year's ploughing matches have proven exceedingly positive for both students and staff alike. There is now eager anticipation for next year's ploughing matches and hope for further successes to celebrate.
