We are immensely proud to announce that our BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology graduate, Callum Craske, has won the CIAT National Student Award for Excellence in Architectural Technology!

The CIAT is the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists, a dynamic, forward-thinking and inclusive global membership qualifying body for Architectural Technology.

Callum won this prestigious award due to the creation of his project ‘The Hide – Centre of Environmental Safeguarding’, a project which aims to provide a community and educational research facility for both local and national environmental protection initiatives along the Norfolk coast.

More about The Hide:

Callum’s project presents a building with a multifaceted and flowing form, which provides an opportunity to create picturesque views over the coastal landscape for each of the educational environments found within 'The Hide'.

The plans show a selection of both local natural materials in the earth, timber sub-structure and flint cladding, reflecting the project's aim of using local craftspeople and traditional building practices.

The building’s triangulating roof aims to reduce visual impact and creates a winged appearance relating to the rare birds and insects that live in the coastal marshland. All of the proposed footpaths leading to 'The Hide' and the observation pods have also been designed to adequately cope with the needs of ambulant users and access into the building is achieved through low or level thresholds.

Finally, the copious amounts of wood fibre building components used, benefit healthy and comfortable indoor environments while maintaining a low environmental impact.
