Having only opened its doors to students in September 2020, NTU was delighted to invite volunteers from the Alumni and Industry Fellowship Programme to visit the Mansfield Hub for the first time. The Fellows all have an affinity with NTU Mansfield and the local community - they live, work or run their businesses in the area, they studied subjects similar to those offered by the Hub, or they came to higher education via ‘non-traditional’ routes – these remarkable volunteers are therefore in an ideal place to support and inspire our Mansfield students.

Speaking about why she is motivated to support Mansfield students, Alumni Fellow, Debra Holliday, says, "I’ve always lived around the Mansfield area, and I think there’s lots of opportunities for Mansfield residents. It’s important to ‘keep the talent’ in the local area, and it’s great that NTU can be a part of that."

Martin Rigley MBE, Alumni Fellow and founder of local business Lindhurst Engineering, explains why he thinks NTU Mansfield is a game changer for Mansfield and Ashfield. He says, "I’m an engineer and employ engineering people - having NTU here with its really strong links with employers, so employers know they can recruit people with the right type of skills, offers really exciting opportunities for the prospects and identity of the area."

The event coincided with the first day of the Mansfield Challenge, where local employers set challenges for Mansfield students as part of Work Like Experience at NTU, with Fellows joining the final session. Fellows and staff then had the opportunity to network and Charlotte Stockwell, Head of Mansfield Operations, provided a short presentation to introduce NTU Mansfield’s objectives, highlighting the University’s contribution to driving levelling-up.

The event ended with a tour of the £6.5 million University Centre and the £2.5m Teaching and Learning Centre, including the mock observation ward for nursing students, the Garvey Ward, and the virtual reality room.

NTU Mansfield is looking forward to Fellows supporting and inspiring students by participating in a variety of volunteering activities, including seminar support, mentoring and assisting with employability workshops.
