Nottingham Business School students deliver new, bright thinking to businesses

Final year students at Nottingham Business School (NBS) tackle real business challenges as part of #NBSBright.

In the Autumn term 2022, over 1500 final year NBS students worked in teams to address a diverse range of real business challenges facing local and national organisations. Revolution de Cuba, for example, challenged students to conduct a detailed competitor analysis, whilst HMRC enlisted support with staff engagement and recruitment. FDM, the global leader in the Recruit, Train and Deploy sector, were keen to gather the students’ insight to improve their diversity and marketing strategies.

Students were able to put their learning to the test, applying concepts and theories from their studies and engaging in fresh research and analysis to help businesses overcome their challenges. #NBSBright results in a win-win; participating organisations get to tap into the skills and knowledge of NBS students and take away bright, new ideas and recommendations, and students get a chance to shine in a consultancy role, adding value to an organisation whilst developing resilience, resourcefulness, research skills, problem-solving ability and expertise in presenting to a senior management audience.

Charlotte Wainwright, a final year Business Management and Marketing student and her team created an influencer marketing campaign to enable Talolo Boots, a small retail business with a range of cowboy-style wellington boots, to boost sales. The team identified that cowboy boots were trending on TikTok and so recommended a campaign to target a younger audience, using a small group of nano influencers who create fashion and lifestyle content.

Charlotte said: “Completing the NBS Bright assignment not only helped me develop a greater understanding of influencer marketing and how to plan a campaign, but the project also allowed me to work on improving my presentation skills. I enjoyed taking part as it gave me the opportunity to apply what I was learning to a real client brief.”

Ben Whitehand of Axed Global — a local business based in Nottingham and Lincoln — found #NBSBright influential for tackling business problems that often get neglected. He said: “Working with NBS Bright gives us as a small business the opportunity to understand some fresh thinking from students in areas they are passionate about, and access to resources that we wouldn’t normally have. It also provides an opportunity to find solutions to areas of the business that are sometimes put down the priority list. It’s a great programme to be involved in!”

NBS Bright allows businesses to tap into the talent and creative thinking of final year Nottingham Business School students and provide them with experiential learning opportunities that benefit people, business and society.
