Students from the BA (Hons) Economics with International Finance and Banking course at NBS spent six weeks testing their investment acumen against peers from around the world. They put the theory from their studies into practice by participating in the Bloomberg Trading Challenge — a global competition, testing teams as they invest in financial markets with the aim of generating the highest financial return.

‘Trading Tycoons’ led by Lloyd Jones and comprising of Luciano Pitrolino and Dilpesh Wara were NBS’s highest performing team. They earned a profit of $137,771 to place an excellent 39th out of 942 teams.

Lloyd Jones said: “We wanted to take a renewable approach to our trading strategy and so focussed on renewable energy. With what’s happening in Ukraine, the oil and gas crisis and global warming, everyone’s looking for an alternative and investing in renewable sources of energy, making it a reliable choice. I’d like to go into finance after uni so getting hands-on experience with the Bloomberg Terminal was exceptional and great for my CV”.

Dilpesh Wara added: “I didn’t know Lloyd or Luca before we started, so it has helped massively for teamworking, getting out your comfort zone and meeting new people. After performing so well it’s given me that extra bit of confidence”.

Other teams ‘Alpha Hunters’ and ‘Trent Bulls’ placed 140th and 143rd respectively to mark an impressive showing from NBS, with all the teams benefiting from a stimulating and testing experiential learning opportunity.

The industry-standard Bloomberg software which enables the analysis of real-time economic and financial data is integrated into the teaching, learning and assessment of the BA (Hons) Economics with International Finance and Banking degree at NBS. The active and practical approach the software facilitates is popular with students and provides a work-like experience. The teams’ performances in the challenge demonstrates the value of NBS’s applied approach to teaching the economics of financial decision-making in preparing students for this work-like experience of investment management.
