The Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Centre (ISTeC) is equipped to provide a high-tech environment for Chemistry students.

About the ISTeC Chemistry Laboratory

Take a tour of our Chemistry facilities.

As a hub of creativity and innovation, the Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Centre (ISTeC) is equipped to provide a modern, high-tech environment for our undergraduate and postgraduate students in the field of chemistry.

If you pursue a chemistry-related course at the undergraduate or masters level, you will enjoy exclusive access to these resources for your research projects. These projects are carried out in smaller groups within individual pods, ensuring a focused and immersive learning experience. This hands-on approach allows you to directly engage with equipment that is directly relevant to your field of study.

Additionally, our technical team is always on hand to provide you with support and ensure the smooth operation of the facilities which are also available to researchers, and industry professionals alike, fostering a collaborative environment for knowledge exchange.

Specialist facilities

Pods (A-D)

We have four interconnected laboratories (Pods) that are designed to accommodate up to 72 final year bachelor's and master's students who are conducting independent research projects.

Equipment

Each student in the pod is allocated their own fume hood and laboratory bench space where they can work closely with an academic to perform research in various areas of chemistry, including organic, inorganic, analytical, and physical chemistry. All the necessary equipment and resources are provided, including vacuum and nitrogen lines, as well as the expected glassware. The Pods are equipped with a range of instruments, such as a dynamic light scattering instrument (DLS), Three UV spectrophotometers (including one with solid capability), six rotary evaporators, Fourier Transform Infra-red Spectroscopy (FTIR), an optical microscope, orbital shakers, a vacuum oven, various other ovens, and a freeze dryer.

In addition to traditional columns, there is also an automated Flash Chromatography instrument available for use. The labs are equipped with devices for centrifugation, pH and conductivity measurements, surface tension analysis, refractive index measurements, and a drop-shape analyser. These resources enable students to conduct comprehensive research and analysis in their chosen areas of study within the field of chemistry.
