Biomedical Engineering facilities

Our biomedical engineering facilities are based in the Engineering Building on the Clifton campus. They provide an extensive range of equipment to develop good biological, engineering and chemical laboratory skills, and to enable students to design and develop their own ideas and products to improve future healthcare.

As part of the department of engineering, our biomedical engineering students have access to a range of facilities including:

  • Human factors lab which houses our EEG system, Functional Near-Infrared System, eye tracker, Laprascopy simulator. Measurement of physiological parameters takes place here (for example brain and heart activity) to help understand how the human body behaves in health and disease. A starting point to come up with new ideas for monitoring health, it is also a place to help clinicians train to perform surgeries and test new surgical tools.
  • Biosensor lab containing a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) printer, UV cabinet and etching tank. The lab allows students and researchers to develop biosensors such as those based on optical fibre technology and printed electronic textiles.
  • Mechanics lab including 3D printers and mechanical testers for characterisation through tensile and compression testing. It provides 3D printing facilities for students to develop clinical equipment or prosthetics and equipment to test biocompatibility and other material characteristics of these printed materials.
  • Biomedical lab including cell culture facilities, optical sensors, bioprinter and spectrophotometer. This lab is dedicated to cell growth and creation of biological scaffolds for growing 3D biological cell structures.
  • Engineering materials suite housing fume hoods, microscopes, digital pH meters and electrochemistry equipment. This lab is the primary lab for first year biomedical engineering students. It is where students learn the basic chemistry and material science skills needed in the later part of their courses.
  • Sports research lab including our climatic chamber to study elite athletes’ responses to extremes of heat, cold and altitude. The equipment in this lab helps our students better understand the interactions between humans and their environment, which can affect health and the function of biomedical engineering tools.
  • Computer Lab containing a range of high-speed computers for design and simulation work. This lab is used to create models of new biomedical materials and tools and perform simulations on these materials for characterisation and function evaluation.
