What you’ll study

You will study the six subject areas which constitute SQE 1’s Functioning Legal Knowledge Assessments, integrating substantive law with procedural law and ethics.

The six subject areas are:

  1. Principles of Professional Conduct, Public and Administrative law and Solicitors’ Accounts and the Legal Systems of England and Wales;
  2. Dispute Resolution in Contract and Tort;
  3. Business Law and Practice;
  4. Wills and the Administration of Estates and Trusts;
  5. Criminal Law and Practice;
  6. Property Practice

You will also study the five practical legal skills which constitute SQE 2’s assessments, namely:

  • Client interviewing;
  • Advocacy;
  • Case and Matter Analysis;
  • Legal Research and Legal Writing;
  • Legal Drafting.

You will study the five legal skills in all of the following contexts:

  • Dispute Resolution in Contract and Tort;
  • Property Practice;
  • Business Law and Practice;
  • Criminal Law and Practice;
  • Wills and the Administration of Estates and Trusts

Prior to enrolling on the course, you will receive revision materials containing key principles of law applicable to the practice areas to be studied in this course and to be tested in SQE 1. These are the key principles that you have already studied in your law degree or other equivalent recognised course. These materials are intended to help you revise these principles. Whilst there is no face to face teaching of these key principles of law, you will be required to test your knowledge and understanding of them throughout the course by undertaking a number of MCQs and to build upon this using the resources provided.

As this course is at level 7, the course is designed to build upon the knowledge and understanding of the law and skills that have been gained at undergraduate level. This is achieved through the use of realistic case studies relating to the law and procedure in the context of Dispute Resolution, Property Law and Practice, Business Law and Practice, Criminal Law and Practice and Wills and the Administration of Estates and Trusts.

You will then complete either a dissertation of 6,000 words focusing on a topic of research based on legal practice, or two online bespoke electives relevant to work in practice or a period of legal work experience and a professional practice report. You will have the benefit of a dedicated academic supervisor for your dissertation and professional practice report (should you choose to complete the period of work experience) and will be able to request one-to-one meetings for guidance.

Further information on what you'll study

Please be aware that all optional/elective modules are subject to availability, and NTU reserves the right to amend, change or withdraw modules at its discretion.

How you’re taught

All teaching will be on campus with face to face teaching; there is no option to attend seminars and workshops online.

This course will be taught, and you are required to attend in person, on three full days each week (Tuesdays – Thursdays).  Lectures are recorded so that you can view them at a convenient time. This format requires that you are on campus for three days each week for teaching but gives you the option to complete your preparatory work off campus during the rest of the week. Exceptionally you may be required to attend examinations or induction events on any day of the week but you will receive notice of these dates well in advance.

The SQE 1 and SQE 2 preparation modules are delivered through an initial series of lectures in each subject area to enable a student to develop relevant basic knowledge and understanding. The lectures act as a stimulus to encourage involvement in the relevant knowledge and understanding and to develop independent learning.

You will also participate in regular two hour-long weekly workshops that are linked to the lectures and which build on students’ prior  knowledge and understanding of the law in a practical context. These workshops do not repeat the content of the lectures but provide an opportunity to test your knowledge and understanding and to develop your skills through student-focussed debate and discussion, problem-solving, reasoned application of the relevant law, and analysis, synthesis and evaluation of each individual’s own learning.

E-learning activities will be integrated within the programme of study and will be designed to encourage interaction with learning, further improve independent learning skills and to provide opportunities to confirm understanding. In particular, students will be given a considerable number of formative assessments based on multiple choice questions at the beginning and throughout the first part of the course since this is the chosen mode of examination for the centralised SQE 1 assessment.

SQE 2 preparation will take place after you have taken your SQE 1 NLS assessments but this is not dependent upon passing the SQE1 centralised assessment. The teaching for these modules will be predominantly in small group sessions of two hours duration, through the vehicle of the case studies relevant to the specific subject areas, and with the tutor acting as facilitator. These skills-based activities will take place in small groups allowing for an individualised learning experience.

The sessions adopt and promote an action-based learning approach which can be described as “learning by doing”. You will undertake problem solving exercises, analyse case studies, take part in simulations, and actively engage in the subject matter.

You will prepare for these small group sessions by undertaking independent planning and research, directed reading and engaging with and reflecting upon online learning resources.

The course and curriculum are designed to ensure a progressive and integrated approach to the acquisition of knowledge and skills, to enable you to undertake the SQE 2 skills assessments.

You will also have the opportunity to obtain a Masters qualification alongside the preparation for the professional assessment. You will have the benefit of a dedicated academic supervisor for your dissertation or professional practice report (should you choose to complete the period of work experience) and will be able to request one-to-one meetings for guidance. If you opt to undertake electives, these bespoke modules will be available asynchronously online making use of innovative educational technology to ensure a personalised and engaging learning journey.  If you choose to complete a period of legal work experience, you will have the opportunity to utilise and further develop the knowledge and skills that you have acquired in the course of your legal studies by supporting clients on a range of legal issues in practical scenarios.
