Introduction:
This top-up degree gives you a hands-on approach to learning. You’ll be taught in small groups with access to lots of practical and lab-based work. This approach makes you think and behave like a professional sport scientist. Modules have been designed to give you practical skills and industry knowledge. Regular guest speakers bring the subject to life through their insights into what’s happening right now in the industry.
Assessment will be through coursework activities where you’ll demonstrate your understanding through written reports, individual and group presentations, project work as well as through your portfolio which you’ll develop on this course as evidence of your professional and academic progress.
You’ll be applying your learning in our state-of-the-art sport science facilities at our Mansfield site. Our well-equipped labs include eye-tracker systems for sport psychology, 3D motion capture systems for biomechanics and a range of bikes, treadmills and performance analysers for sports physiology.

What you’ll study
In the Applied Performance Analysis module you’ll link with professional sports teams from around the world, and in our Exercise and Health for Children and Adolescents module you’ll gain experience of collecting physical activity and health data in a school environment.
Analysis of Human Performance
You'll develop your knowledge of the physical capabilities of athletes or clients and understand how to measure and evaluate human performance in sport and exercise science laboratory settings. To understand human performance, you must understand traditional and modern methods of collecting, analysing, and interpreting data, and you'll gain a lot of experience doing this within a sporting setting.
Exercise and Health in Children and Adolescents
This module is ideal grounding if you are looking to work with children and adolescents in the future. You'll learn how to critically assess and measure methods of assessing health in children before using this knowledge to make recommendations.
Advanced Topics in Sport Psychology
Develop your critical evaluation skills by focusing on current topics in sport and exercise psychology. You'll study and discuss sport psychology using journals and relevant literature - broadening your knowledge of this multidimensional subject.
Performance Analysis
In this industry-focused module, you will consider the performance analysis needs within a specific sporting context, focusing on notational analysis and using specialist equipment and software. You will apply diagnostic, analytical and creative skills to develop a Performance Analysis department.
Research Project
You'll produce an original and independent piece of work related to your interests, in a specialist area of sport science, coaching, exercise science or sport and leisure management.

As a Sport and Exercise Science student at Nottingham Trent University in Mansfield, you'll learn how to use sport and exercise science equipment and apply cutting-edge technologies in our high-tech Mansfield Sport and Exercise Science Laboratory throughout your foundation degree.
Entry requirements
- a foundation degree in sport science or a related area; or
- Pass of an HND course in sport science or related area: and
- GCSE English and Maths grade C / 4.

Other qualifications and experience
We may also consider credits achieved at other universities and your work/life experience through an assessment of prior learning. This may be for year one entry, or beyond the beginning of a course where applicable, for example, into year 2. Additional costs
Your course fees cover the cost of studies, and include loads of great benefits, such as the use of our brand-new library, industry-standard workshops and study spaces, support from our expert Employability team, and free use of the IT equipment across our campuses.
Library books
You’ll need to cover the cost of your own books, standard drawing and writing equipment and consumables. However, our NTU in Mansfield library is home to a wide range of books, journals and materials (many of which you can access online) – meaning you may not need to purchase as many books as you might think! Our library team work closely with our academics to ensure that our library collection closely matches the topics you’ll be studying, to provide relevant resources for you to use, free of charge.
Printing and materials costs
Students should also budget approximately £100 per year to cover any printing that they may require to support their studies.
Placements
If you're undertaking a placement year, you'll need to budget for accommodation and any travel costs you may incur whilst on placement. Many of our placement students do earn a salary whilst on placement which can help to cover these living costs.
