Spanish

The course is suitable for beginner learners of Spanish with some knowledge of the language, equivalent to stage 1, for example, GCSE grade B or C (points 6 to 4).

Course Content

During the course, you will learn about countries around the Hispanic world, how to describe business or holiday trips, go clothes shopping and talk about yourself and events, in the past and the future.

Course Outcome

At the end of the course, you will have deepened your appreciation of Spanish grammar and structures at an elementary level, and you will be able to extend your conversation in key areas of everyday communication.

Certification

If you successfully complete stage 2 with a grade II:1 or above, you will achieve a UNILANG certificate for A1 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Spanish stage 3 is the right stage for you if you have completed successfully Spanish stage 2 or equivalent, e.g., GCSE grade A*/A (points 9 to 7, or CEFR level A1).

Course Content

During the course, you will study topics relating to life in Spain, such as traditions, health and lifestyle, education, and the world of work.

You will revise and practice some aspects seen in Stage 2 before you are introduced to more advanced tenses and structures.

Course Outcome

At the end of the course, you should be able to apply the new structures acquired during the course in writing and in extended oral exchanges.

Certification

If you successfully complete stage 3 with a grade II:1 or above, you will achieve a UNILANG certificate for A2 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Spanish stage 4 is the right stage for you if you have completed successfully Spanish stage 3 or equivalent, e.g., AS level A/B/C, or A level grade D or E, or CEFR level A2.

Course Content

During the course, you will study topics relating to the environment and sustainability, new technologies in the world of education, social media, successful Spanish businesspeople, healthy living and diet.

Course Outcome

At the end of the course, your communication skills will have been developed further to enable you to express confidently intentions and wishes, predictions, and suggestions.

Certification

If you successfully complete stage 4 with a grade II:1 or above, you will achieve a UNILANG certificate for B1 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Spanish stage 5 is the right stage for you if you have completed successfully Spanish stage 4 or equivalent, e.g. A level grade A, B, or C, or CEFR level B1.

Course Content

Topic areas typically include current affairs, social and political issues in Spain as well as exploring issues connected with cultural differences, experiencing cultural shock, and regional stereotyping in Spain.

There are also opportunities to study themes and topics related to your own areas of interest.

Course Outcome

At the end of the course, you will be able to summarise extended written and spoken texts, as well as discuss complex ideas.

Certification

In stages 5 and 6, you study towards level B2 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

If you successfully complete stage 6 with a grade II:1 or above, you will achieve a UNILANG certificate for B2 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Stage 6

Spanish stage 6 is the right stage for you if you have completed successfully Spanish stage 5 or equivalent, e.g., an A level Spanish plus at least one further year of study abroad/experience (or equivalent).

Topic areas typically include current affairs, and social and political issues in Spain such as illegal immigration, gender inequalities at work, and youth unemployment.

Stage 7

Spanish stage 7 is the right stage for you if you have completed successfully Spanish stage 6 or equivalent, e.g., an A level Spanish plus at least one further year of study abroad/experience (or equivalent), or CEFR level B2.

Topic areas typically include current affairs, and social and political issues in Spain and Latin America such as gender issues, stereotyping, autocratic regimes, and the impact of the economic crisis.

There are also opportunities to study themes and topics related to your own areas of interest.

Course Outcome

At the end of the course, you will be able to summarise extended written and spoken texts, use the appropriate tone, register, and style, expressing complex ideas with nuance and sophistication.
