Introduction:
Learning a foreign language is a wonderful opportunity to not only learn the language itself, but also to reveal different perspectives on life, enabling you to explore new cultures through a different lens.
Our courses are more than just engaging classroom sessions supported by excellent online resources.
You’ll also have the option to take assessments and be awarded a Nottingham Trent University (NTU) Language Programme Certificate of Achievement.
If you continue to study with us, you may become eligible for a Certificate of Language Learning or Diploma of Language Learning (or the UNILANG Certificate).

What you’ll study
Our language classes are divided into Stages. Stage one is designed for real beginners whilst stage three is for improving learners. Check out the entry requirements to determine which stage is most appropriate for you. Some languages are available across levels in terms of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This allows students to work towards UNILANG recognition, which is highly recognised by employers. For more information, see our 'Awards' section.

The course is suitable for complete beginners in Japanese with virtually no prior knowledge of the language.
Course Book
As the course book for this stage, we use the first half of Japanese for Busy People, vol.1, revised 4th edition, Kana version.
Course Content
During the course you will learn how to talk about basic personal details and your daily routines, to engage in conversations for shopping situations and to make a reservation at a restaurant, among other topics.
Course Outcome
At the end of the course, you will have some basic appreciation of Japanese grammar and structures.
Also, you will have the functioning knowledge of Hiragana and Katakana and utilise them for reading and writing Japanese.
We will also learn about 40 Chinese characters called Kanji.
The course is suitable if you have successfully completed Japanese stage 1 or equivalent, e.g., GCSE at grade C or D, or point 4 to 3 in Japanese or equivalent.

During the course you will learn how to talk about your family members, town, holidays, hobbies, to give compliments, and to give directions, among other topics.
Course Outcome
At the end of the course, you will have deepened your appreciation of Japanese grammar and structures at the basic level, and you will be able to make an appointment with someone, ask permission, make a request, forbid actions, and comment on events using the past tense of adjectives.
You will have learned an increasing number of Kanji characters for both reading and writing.

The online classes will be delivered by the teacher via MS Teams, and you can complete many interactive exercises in your own time.

Japanese stage 3 is the right stage for you if you have successfully completed Japanese stage 2, or equivalent, e.g., GCSE at grade A or B or point 7 to 5 in Japanese or equivalent.

Course Content
During the course you will study topics relating to eating outdoors, seasons and weather, business trips, staying healthy, and many others.
Course Outcome
At the end of the course, you will be able to express your future plans, talk about your involvement in the culture of another country, and about how you keep yourself healthy.
Every four weeks, there will be discussions about aspects of Japanese culture which you may find fascinating.
During the course, you will have learned an increasing number of Kanji characters and acquired the typing skills in Japanese.
As you work through this module, you will have many opportunities to collaborate and interact with your fellow students.
You will engage in group tasks, activities, and discussions in this learning room, as well as during the weekly online Microsoft Teams sessions.
How you’re assessed
Assessments will take place in class during University term time. To progress onto the next stage of your chosen language you must complete and pass all the assessments on the previous stage.

In our library you’ll have access to an extensive and diverse range of books including those on your reading list.

Nottingham Trent University has its own Blackwell’s Bookshop which stocks relevant academic texts plus a wide range of bestselling novels.
IT Resources
Our IT resource rooms and PC clusters are distributed across the campus, with PCs providing access to: Microsoft Office, email, web browsing, networked file storage and high-speed online printing services (with a free printing allowance for each student). Resource rooms are available 24 hours a day.
Societies
Current students run societies in a range of Humanities and Arts subjects including History, Medieval, Film, Filmmaking, Philosophy, Politics and International Relations, and the Book society.
There are also a number of media channels which our students get involved in such as the NTU radio station FlyLive, our student magazine Platform, and TV station TrentTV.
