Event details

In her talk, Sarah Gensburger will reflect on the relationship between memory, archiving and forgetting. Studying the transition from grassroots memorialization of the November 13 terrorist attack in the streets of Paris to the permanent heritagization of the event, she will highlight how commemorative processes creates as much remembrance as oblivion. In doing so, she will go beyond the impact of the traumatic nature of the events to stress on the way the administration of memory, here at a city level, strongly frames the way memory unfold in public space. Through this case study, she will offer a methodological reflection on how we can research memory differently, paying close attention to ordinary processes and social continuities.

Please join us for this exciting lecture, followed by discussion and a drinks reception.

Sarah Gensburger researches the relationship between memory, administration and politics. She serves as the past president of the Memory Studies Association.
