Role
Dr Carl Webster provides academic leadership across the Allied Health portfolio within the Institute of Health and Allied Professions. As Principal Lecturer in Paramedic Practice & Emergency Care, he oversees programmes in Paramedic Science, Ambulance Technician Practice, and Occupational Health, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, practice-informed education that meets the needs of both students and healthcare providers.
In addition to his academic leadership, Carl serves as Chair for the School of Social Sciences in the Knowledge Exchange Seed Fund, Progression Exam Boards, and Fitness to Practice Panels. He also contributes as a committee member on the School of Social Sciences Learning and Teaching Committee, the School Academic Standards and Quality Committee, the Practice and External Engagement Committee, and the Principal Lecturer’s Leadership Group.
Career overview
Carl Webster has over a decade of experience in higher education, with previous academic positions at the University of East Anglia and De Montfort University before joining Nottingham Trent University.
Beginning his career as a Lecturer in Pharmacology, Carl later trained as a Paramedic, gaining HCPC registration, which he continues to maintain. After practising clinically in the East of England, he transitioned to De Montfort University as a Senior Lecturer in Paramedicine, where he led the successful approval of the Paramedic Degree Apprenticeship.
At Nottingham Trent University, Carl initially served as a Senior Lecturer in Paramedic Practice & Emergency Care, leading the BSc Paramedic Science course. He now holds the role of Principal Lecturer, providing strategic academic leadership across the Allied Health portfolio.
Research areas
Carl’s research focuses on enhancing paramedic education through evidence-based approaches. His current work investigates simulation-based learning in paramedic education and strategies to address student workplace violence in healthcare settings.
He has published in peer-reviewed journals, including a Paramedic Pharmacology series in the Journal of Paramedic Practice. Carl has also presented his research at national and international conferences, contributing to the ongoing advancement of paramedic education and practice.
External activity
In addition to his academic role, Carl Webster serves as an Executive Member of the European Prehospital Research Network and as the Geographical Education Lead for the College of Paramedics, representing the Midlands region on the National Paramedic Education Network.
He also contributes to the advancement of paramedic scholarship as an editorial board member for the Journal of Paramedic Practice, regularly reviewing submissions and supporting the dissemination of research in the field.
