Role
Dr Adeolu Adewoye is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Science and Technology at NTU. His scholarship in Bioscience Research Education examines how diverse students develop laboratory competence, quantitative and data literacy, scientific judgement and independence. His work combines authentic, inclusive and evidence-informed teaching with research into educational inequalities, game-based learning and digital innovation.
Alongside this, he maintains research interests in molecular and cellular ageing and is developing interdisciplinary work on health inequalities.

Adeolu’s ambition is to establish Bioscience Research Education as a recognised area of scholarship and educational leadership at NTU and beyond. His work aims to improve how universities prepare diverse students for contemporary bioscience research and employment by integrating authentic laboratory learning, quantitative and data literacy, educational innovation and equity.
His developing research in health inequalities extends this agenda beyond higher education, connecting bioscience, data, digital innovation and community-informed research to wider questions of equity in health and society.

Selected Educational Innovations and Projects
Dilution Lab Rescue is a collaborative, game-based learning resource designed to strengthen laboratory calculations, scientific problem-solving and confidence. Students apply dilution calculations, unit conversions and solution preparation within authentic laboratory scenarios.
Digital Tools for Bioscience Data Analysis: apps that guide students through data quality assessment, statistical analysis, visualisation and interpretation while promoting transparent and reproducible scientific practice. This work explores how digital technologies and artificial intelligence can support learning and decision making without replacing scientific reasoning. Adeolu has previously co-supervised PhD students in ageing biology and molecular genetics and is currently co-supervising a fully funded interdisciplinary PhD project on personalised digital avatars for carer training in care-home settings, developed through collaborative and community-engaged research – the link https://collaboratoryresearchhub.ac.uk/avatars-for-inclusive-carer-training/
He welcomes enquiries from prospective PhD students and collaborators interested in interdisciplinary research spanning bioscience, education, health, data and digital innovation.
Career overview
Adeolu trained in biological sciences, completing a BSc (Hons) in Botany at the University of Ilorin, followed by an MSc in Molecular Genetics and PhD in Genetics at the University of Leicester. He subsequently held research positions at Loughborough University’s Centre for Biological Engineering and the University of Birmingham’s Inflammation and Ageing group before joining Nottingham Trent University in 2022. His multidisciplinary research background spans genetics, genomics, molecular and cellular biology, ageing and translational biomedical research, and now provides the disciplinary foundation for his scholarship in Bioscience Research Education. He also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
Research areas
Adeolu’s principal area of scholarship is Bioscience Research Education, exploring how universities can prepare diverse students to think, work and make decisions as bioscientists. Through the Inclusive Bioscience Laboratory and Data Learning Programme, he develops and evaluates authentic, inclusive and evidence-informed approaches to strengthen practical skills, quantitative confidence, data literacy, scientific reasoning and learner independence.
His research spans four interconnected themes: laboratory learning and scientific reasoning; quantitative and data literacy; educational inequalities and inclusive bioscience education; and digital, AI, simulation and narrative learning. His work examines how students develop scientific judgement, confidence and independence, and how educational background, ethnicity, accessibility and belonging influence participation, attainment and progression, with particular interest in inequalities affecting Black students.
Building on this work, Adeolu is developing interdisciplinary research into educational and health inequalities, combining bioscience, quantitative analysis and community-engaged research to explore biological, social and structural factors contributing to unequal outcomes.
He also has an established research background in molecular genetics, biochemistry, genomics, bioinformatics, cell biology and ageing, with expertise in cellular senescence and molecular ageing. His laboratory experience includes mammalian cell culture, qPCR, Western blotting, ELISA, chromatography and cellular imaging.
Adeolu welcomes interdisciplinary collaborations connecting bioscience, education, data, digital innovation and health inequalities, particularly projects that translate research into meaningful improvements for students, communities, healthcare and wider society.
