Role

Sophie Butler is a Senior Lecturer for FdSc Veterinary Nursing at NTU's Brackenhurst Campus, as well as Course Leader for BSc (Hons) Veterinary Nursing Science (final year top-up).

Module Leader for Level 6 Applied Critical Care Nursing and Level 5 Applied Medical Nursing and Surgical Nursing and Theatre Practice.

Career overview

Graduating from the University College of Dublin with a BSc (Hons) Veterinary Nursing Science in 2018, Sophie then became a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, registering as a Registered Veterinary Nursing (RVN).

Sophie has extensive practical experience from working in a mixed practice (small animal, farm and equine) and equine referral hospitals. She has travelled abroad as a surgical nurse during her career (France and Belgium).

Sophie has completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Nursing and Masters in Advanced Practice in Veterinary Nursing with the University of Glasgow. Sophie completed a  Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in  2025.

Her areas of interest are around surgery, medicine, critical care, and equine veterinary medicine.

Research areas

Sophie is currently writing a paper on equine gastric ulcers, specifically looking at the efficacy of drug therapy for the treatment of glandular ulcers in horses.
