University named as part of successful bid for local TV licence
Notts TV will launch in spring 2014
Nottingham Trent University is to help make history as part of a consortium which has successfully bid for a licence to run a new local TV station.
The consortium, made up of the University, Confetti Media Group, Nottingham Post Media Group and Inclusive Digital, will now work towards the launch of Notts TV in spring 2014.
Local television is an initiative spearheaded by former Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt and stems from an understanding that local audiences could be better served in terms of locally relevant TV content.
Back in August broadcast industry regulators Ofcom revealed that it had received 57 bids for licences to run local TV services in 21 cities and towns across the UK, including Nottingham, Glasgow, Belfast, Cardiff, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Sheffield and London.
The Notts TV consortium submitted a bid to run the 12 year licence for Nottingham. The bid, which is available to read on the Ofcom website, outlined its vision for local television, programming commitments and collective skills and experience.
Nottingham is one of the first cities to be awarded a licence, with other cities and their awards due to be announced over the next few months.
Notts TV is represented by four corporate directors: Garry Smith, commercial director, Nottingham Trent University, Craig Chettle, owner and MD of Confetti Media Group, Steve Hollingsworth, publisher Nottingham Post Media Group, and Nigel Dacre, CEO of Inclusive Digital and former editor of ITV News.
The Notts TV consortium benefits from news and broadcast experience of journalists at the Nottingham Post Group, next-generation broadcasting talent from both Nottingham Trent University and the Confetti Institute of Creative Technologies, and the experience of ex-ITV and BBC broadcasters.
Nottingham Trent University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Neil Gorman, said: "We’re very proud to be part of a consortium which will work closely with the local community to create a TV station that best serves their needs. Our involvement also provides opportunities for our students to offer their skills while gaining valuable experience in producing high-quality programming."
Craig Chettle will chair its board of directors for its inaugural year. He said: "We thank Ofcom for selecting Notts TV to run Nottingham’s first television station. Our consortium is funding the first three years of the channel and we expect to bring a range of quality programmes, beyond the core remit of news to Notts residents. This is an exciting opportunity to create something unique for Nottingham and produce content that really matters and is relevant to the city’s residents. Quality for us is key and we will now begin assembling a strong team to manage the channel and to ensure our commitments as outlined in our bid are delivered."
Mel Cook, editor of the Nottingham Post, said: "We are delighted to be involved in such an exciting venture. Notts TV will showcase the abundance of creative talent that exists in our area and we are looking forward to providing high quality news coverage."
Graham Allen, MP for Nottingham North, added: "I see Notts TV as a real opportunity to bring relevant news to my constituents but see it also as an opportunity and a platform for their news, views and concerns to be aired. I congratulate the consortium on their successful bid and very much look forward to tuning in myself when the station launches."
The managing editor of Notts TV will be former BBC News correspondent Rob Pittam. Residents of the Greater Nottingham area will be able to view a range of local news, current affairs and quality programmes on digital terrestrial television on freeview channel 8.
The consortium will be sharing news and seeking contributions from Notts TV’s potential audience between now and the launch date and will be hosting a series of events over the coming months where people can find out more.
